The only place in the world where the ordinary tourist can experience an underground tour in a working diamond mine, is at De Beers Kimberley Mines Joint Shaft. These are the oldest and deepest operational diamond mines on earth. After surfacing, go to the Open Mine Museum and the famous Kimberley Big Hole to get to know more about the hectic diamond rush of a century ago. Then depart for the diamond diggings to experience living history first-hand at one of the many, alluvial diamond diggings on the outskirts of Kimberley. This is where there are still diggers chasing furtune with only pick and shovel!
The Richtersveld in the Northern Cape is an arid and inhospitable wilderness of rugged scenery where even the hardienst species must struggle to survive.
